The world’s sixth largest country lies between the Indian and Pacific oceans and is home to 24 million people who live largely along its coastline. In the period following the second world war, Australia was a very insular society which was not welcoming to immigrants from countries other than the United Kingdom. In subsequent years, immigration numbers rose steadily and over 200 languages are now spoken by its increasingly multi-cultural citizens. Language barriers have been a burden to those seeking a new life in the “land downunder”, making culturally-appropriate language learning programs a must. Interpretation and translation services are also in high demand to assist new Australians in accessing community services and amenities.
